Where should I plant my perennials?

Perennials have a fixed growth cycle and come up in the same place every year, making them very suitable to use as a permanent base for your garden. They are the backbone of your outdoor space and give structure to its look and feel. Our bare root perennials are relatively cheap and easy to plant. They come in different sizes, shapes and colours - the one more beautiful than the other. Having your research done helps you to choose the best plant for the right spot, as many different types of plants have different soil requirements. We recommend having the ground prepared so that plants are spending the least time between lifting and replanting. Also, well-prepared soil is key to any plant's ability to grow and flourish. If your soil isn't quite compacted, adding a little grit or gravel can help loosen it up; if it's sandy, adding compost can improve drainage.

What are bare root plants?

Before you decide on the perennial you want to add to your basket, it might be useful to give you some information on these type of plants. What exactly are bare root plants? They are plants that have been grown in open fields and have a bare root visible when lifted from the ground. They are less labour-intensive to grow than perennials with a root ball or in containers. This makes bare root plants relatively cheap, as well as easier and less heavy to transport than hedges that need soil around their roots. There is no need for re-pots every year and fewer fertilisers are needed, which saves on resources and is better for the environment. They are only available during their natural dormant season, which runs from November to April.

Remember: it is best to plant the hedge as early in the season, preferably before the end of December. This is because the ground is still relatively warm and new roots can get used to your garden soil more easily. Water plants well until you put them in their final place. If you need any more advice, you know where to go! We are here to help out. Visit Ahern Nurseries & Plant Centre soon for our top-of-the-line perennials and bare root plants.
