To help you choose the perfect plant for your particular needs, chech out the different distinct categories of Hydrangea based on flower shape and growth habits:

  • Mophead (Hydrangea macrophylla): The classic garden hydrangea. It features large, ball-shaped flower clusters that are famously sensitive to soil pH.

  • Lacecap Hydrangea macrophylla: Elegant and delicate. It produces flattened flower heads with a center of tight, fertile buds fringed by showy, open petals

  • Panicle Hydrangea paniculata: Exceptionally hardy and sun-tolerant. It produces large, cone-shaped flower structures that fade from white to deep pink as autumn approaches.

  • Smooth Hydrangea arborescens: Famous for massive, cloud-like white blooms (such as 'Annabelle'). These thrive in colder climates and bloom reliably on new wood.

  • Oakleaf Hydrangea quercifolia: Prized for multi-season interest. It showcases distinct, oak-shaped leaves that turn brilliant crimson in autumn, alongside panicle flowers and peeling bark.

  • Climbing Hydragea petiolaris: A vigorous, woody vine that uses aerial roots to scale walls and fences, blanketed in creamy-white summer lacecap flowers.

  • 'Groundbreaker Blush': Large white flower panicles start to bloom in July and gradually develop deepening blush pink tones as the weather gets cooler in September

  • 'Groundbreaker Ruby': Emerging as clean white, the flowers dramatically shift to a rich pink and then a deep ruby red as autumn approaches. This variety won 2nd place in the prestigious RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year competition, which I was delighted to attend for the first time!

  • 'Groundbreaker 'Greeny': Perfect for a modern aesthetic, the cone-shaped blooms open in a fresh, zesty lime-green shade that holds its color beautifully across the season. I personally think this one is incredible, it's certainly not every ones cup of tea but I think this will find a home in my garden!
