Commonly known as the Umbrella Plant or Indian Rhubarb. Darmra peltata is an extraordinary, prehistoric-looking architectural perennial prized for its massive foliage and dramatic seasonal changes. In early spring, naked hairy stems rise directly from the ground to display rounded clusters of starry blossoms. Only after the flowers fade do the gigantic, shield-like "inside-out umbrella" leaves emerge, creating a spectacular ground canopy that catches puddles of rainwater for visiting birds. They stay deep emerald green all summer, functioning as a magnificent weed-suppressing cover. In autumn, the entire green canopy transforms into a brilliant display of rich coppery-red, pink, and crimson tones before dying back for winter.
