Crataegus monogyna Native Whitethorn or Hawthorn, this is arguably the most important environmental backbone of the Irish countryside. Steeped in rich folklore as the sacred "Fairy Bush" or "May Tree", it serves as the primary plant for traditional agricultural countryside hedges. It is incredibly tough, fiercely thorny, and provides unmatched ecological value across all seasons. In May, the countryside erupts into spectacular ribbons of white as the Whitethorn blooms. The branches are covered in dense clusters of five-petaled creamy-white flowers with pink-tipped anthers, releasing a sweet, heavy scent. In September and October, the blossoms transform into thousands of small, egg-shaped, deep crimson-red berries known as "haws". These hang in heavy clusters as the leaves turn a soft copper-yellow before dropping.

Key Features

  • Form & Size: Deciduous shrub or small tree growing up to 10–15 meters high if left unmanaged, or maintained as a dense 1.5 to 3-meter hedge.
  • Leaves: Shiny, dark green leaves that are deeply 3- to 5-lobed.
  • Stems & Bark: Smooth grey-brown bark that becomes fissured with age, accompanied by sharp, woody branch thorns.
  • Flowers: Flat-topped clusters of fragrant, 5-petaled white (sometimes pink-flushed) hermaphrodite flowers that bloom in May and June.
  • Fruit: Glossy red autumn berries called haws, each containing a single stony seed.

Growing Conditions

  • Soil: Thrives in a wide variety of soil types—including clay, loamy, chalky, and sandy soils. It prefers moist, well-drained conditions and dislikes permanently waterlogged or extremely heavy, wet soils.
  • Light: Prefers full sun to light shade; grows poorly in deep, dark woodland shade.
  • Exposure: Highly tolerant of strong winds, urban pollution, and exposed coastal sites.
  • Maintenance: Can be trimmed every 2 to 3 years to encourage heavy flowering and fruiting, or clipped tightly into a formal boundary hedge.

Wildlife Value

  • Pollinators: Spring blossoms provide a rich, crucial supply of nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies, hoverflies, and other beneficial insects.
  • Caterpillars: The leaves serve as a primary food source for numerous moth caterpillars, including the hawthorn moth and lackey moth.
  • Birds & Mammals:
    • The dense, thorny branches provide safe, protective nesting and roosting sites for songbirds and refuge for small invertebrates.
    • Autumn and winter haws are eaten eagerly by thrushes, blackbirds, and migrating birds, which help disperse the seeds.
    • Small mammals like mice and voles feed on fallen berries on the ground.
  • Ecosystem Support: Because it grows vigorously and protects young seedlings, it acts as a nurse tree for slower-growing native species like oak, supporting hundreds of associated species.
