Ligustrum oval. 'Aureum' - Golden Privet- 60cm-80cm

Ligustrum ovalifolium 'Aureum' also known as the Golden Privet is a highly popular, fast-growing deciduous to semi-evergreen shrub. Recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, this structural multi-stemmed plant is widely celebrated by landscapers for its intensely bright variegated color, dense screening habit, and ability to handle extreme environmental conditions. In milder winters it acts as a true evergreen, keeping its brilliant color all year. In highly exposed, freezing, or severely windy locations, it will shed a portion of its leaves, recovering completely with a thick layer of fresh new growth by mid-spring.

Key Features

• Morphology & Form: A robust, densely branched, upright shrub. If left completely untrimmed, it can reach an ultimate height of 2.5 to 4 metres with a spread of up to 3 metres.
• Foliage: Its primary feature is its glossy, oval-shaped leaves. The foliage is beautifully variegated, boasting a rich green center boldly outlined and splashed with bright golden-yellow margins.
• Evergreen Tendencies: While technically classed as a semi-evergreen, it retains its colourful leaves through most mild winters. During exceptionally harsh winters, it may defoliate or shed some leaves, but it shoots back vigorously with lush new growth in the spring.
• Flowers: In mid-summer (July to August), if it hasn't been tightly sheared back, it produces terminal panicles of creamy-white, tubular flowers. The flowers are heavily, sweetly scented—though some find the intense muskiness an acquired taste.
• Fruit: Following pollination, the flowers develop into small, spherical, glossy black berries that mature in autumn and persist into the winter months.
• Toxicity Warning: The leaves, flowers, and berries of golden privet are toxic to humans, dogs, cats, and livestock if ingested.

Growing Conditions

• Sunlight Requirements: Grows well in full sun to partial shade. However, planting in full sun is highly recommended to maximize the leaf coloration; too much shade will cause the variegated foliage to lose its brightness and revert to standard green.
• Soil Parameters: Eminently adaptable. It thrives in ordinary, fertile garden soils including clay, chalk, loam, and sand. It requires the soil to be well-drained, as it struggles and fails in permanently soggy or waterlogged ground.
• Environmental Tolerances: It is exceptionally tough against heavy urban air pollution, making it perfect for roadside screening in cities. It also easily withstands salt-laden coastal conditions and strong winds.
• Maintenance & Pruning: To maintain a sharp, dense formal appearance, it requires a moderate to high maintenance schedule, benefiting from 3 to 4 trims during the summer growing season. Keep an eye out for "plain green reversion" shoots—if any branches sprout purely green leaves, prune them out at their base immediately so they do not outgrow the variegated branches.

Wildlife Value

• Pollinator Support: The mid-summer flowers are highly melliferous. Their heavy fragrance acts as a powerful beacon that draws in honeybees, bumblebees, hoverflies, and butterflies in large numbers.
• The Winter Berry Larder: The small black autumn berries are a popular, high-energy food source for foraging birds—including thrushes, blackbirds, and waxwings—safely sustaining them into the winter months.
• Nesting Habitat: Because it forms an incredibly tight, dense weave of rigid branches when sheared, it provides superb physical armor and nesting cover. Small garden birds use it to shield their nests from predators and harsh weather conditions.
