Rosa canina commonly known as the Native Irish Dog Rose, it is a scrambling, deciduous native climbing shrub. A key player in traditional countryside hedgerows across Ireland, this vigorous wild rose is celebrated for its graceful arching canes, delicate summer blooms, and high-vitamin autumn fruit.

  • Growth Habit: Grows as an open, scrambling shrub reaching 1 to 4 metres in height with a spread of 2 to 3 metres. It produces long, arching green branches that use curved hooks to scale neighbouring trees and vegetation.
  • The "Dog" Thorns: Armed with strong, sharp, downward-curved thorns. These hooked prickles allow the plant to layer itself and weave into an impenetrable, armored barrier.
  • Foliage: Alternate pinnate leaves divided into 5 to 7 oval, hairless leaflets with sharply jagged or toothed margins. When rubbed, the leaves release a sweet, subtle fragrance.
  • Blossoms: Flowers once a year between May and August. It bears large, delicate, 5-petalled pale pink to white flowers measuring 4 to 5 cm across, centered around a prominent crown of rich yellow stamens.
  • Fruit (Rose Hips): In autumn (October–November), the spent flowers transition into clusters of striking, oval, glossy red-to-orange fruits called hips. Weight for weight, these hips contain 20 times more vitamin C than oranges.
  • Identification Note: It is easily distinguished from its native relative, the field rose (Rosa arvensis), which carries exclusively white flowers and keeps its sepals attached to the fruit.

Growing Conditions

  • Sunlight: Thrives best in full sun to partial shade. While it can survive in semi-shady positions, ample sun exposure is required to produce a heavy flush of flowers and autumn hips.
  • Soil: Eminently adaptable. It tolerates almost any soil type, adapting to clay, heavy, sand, and poor nutrient profiles. It prefers ordinary, well-drained, moist ground.
  • Exposure: Fully hardy and remarkably robust. It easily withstands strong winds and coastal sea spray, making it highly useful for exposed coastal properties or shelterbelt hedging.
  • Maintenance & Pruning: Extremely vigorous, sometimes adding up to 2 metres of fresh growth in a single season. It tolerates heavy pruning beautifully. Gardeners should prune older stems back from late autumn to early spring, ideally waiting until late winter so local wildlife can finish eating the winter rose hips.

Wildlife Value

  • Pollinator Buffet: The lightly scented spring blossoms act as a glowing beacon for pollinators, supplying abundant nectar and pollen to honeybees, bumblebees, butterflies, and hoverflies.
  • The Winter Berry Larder: The prolific display of bright red autumn rose hips is a crucial winter lifeline. They are aggressively stripped and eaten by resident and migrating birds—particularly thrush species like redwings, fieldfares, and blackbirds—as well as small mammals like bank voles, squirrels, and wood mice.
  • Predator Protection: Because the stems interlace with fierce, downward-curving thorns, the shrub forms an impenetrable visual and physical shield. Small, vulnerable garden birds (such as robins, dunnocks, blackcaps, and willow warblers) heavily favor its interior to build secure nests protected from crows, hawks, and ground predators.
  • Ground Cover & Invertebrates: The foliage provides vital larval food for various native moth and insect species. At ground level, the sprawling, arching thickets offer an excellent protective canopy for foraging hedgehogs and small micro-fauna.
