The Anemone Blanda mix, commonly known as the Grecian Windflower, is a beautifully delicate looking collection of small daisy like flowers that form a carpet of colour in early spring when very little else is in flower. This premium mix features a delightful blend of the cutest blooms in shades of sky blue, soft pink and crisp white, each centered with a contrasting ring of bright yellow stamens.
Planted en masse, they create a dazzling naturalized groundcover that wakes up your borders, rock gardens and woodland paths just as winter fades. Their foliage is equally as beautiful with finely cut, fern-like green leaves adding a delicate, texture to the garden floor ever before the blooms take to the stage.
The are very lowing growing only reaching heights of 15cm to 20cm but don't be fooled by either their size or their delicate looking flowers because these are hardy little perennials that will thrive and reward year after year with little to no maintenance.
Planting bulbs correctly in autumn ensures a vibrant display of flowers when spring arrives, follow these few simple planting instructions to be guaranteed results.
Timing and Selection
- Plant in autumn: Aim to plant from September to Octobe for most spring flowering varieties like daffodils, crocuses, and hyacinths.
- Inspect the bulbs: Choose only firm, healthy bulbs. Discard any that feel soft, moldy, or shriveled.
- Late Planting: Don’t panic, planting later than the preferred time does not mean you have lost the opportunity, it means your bulbs will flower slightly later than planned.
Soil and Drainage
- Ensure good drainage: Bulbs rot easily in waterlogged soil. Mix horticultural grit or sand into heavy clay soils.
- Add nutrients: Mix in well-rotted garden compost or leaf mould to enrich the soil before planting.
Depth and Orientation
- Follow the rule of thumb: Plant most bulbs at a depth equal to two to three times their height.
- Face the pointy side up: Always place the bulb with its pointed growing tip facing upward and the flatter, rougher root base pointing down.
Container and Lasagne Planting
- Use pots with drainage: Place broken pottery pieces or gravel at the bottom of containers to keep holes clear.
- Try bulb lasagne: Layer different bulbs in a single pot. Put late-flowering, deep bulbs (like tulips) at the bottom, mid-season ones in the middle, and early bloomers (like crocuses) at the top.
