Protect your property beautifully with the year-round drama of Pyracantha, commonly known as Firethorn. This exceptionally tough, woody evergreen shrub features dense, glossy dark green leaves interspersed with sharp thorns, creating an impenetrable natural security barrier. Beyond its practical defences, it delivers unmatched seasonal colour. In late spring, the branches vanish beneath clouds of fragrant, bee-friendly white flowers. By autumn, these transform into dense, spectacular clusters of vibrant red, bright orange, or golden-yellow berries that last well into winter providing a life-saving feast for native birds.
Key Features
- Natural Intruder Deterrent: Covered in sharp, rigid thorns that form an impenetrable, eco-friendly security barrier against trespassers.
- Spectacular Winter Berries: Yields breathtaking clusters of fiery red, vibrant orange, or sunny yellow berries that persist even through heavy frosts.
- Thrives in Problem Spots: Incredibly resilient and easy to grow, handles poor soils with ease, deep shade, full sun and exposed, wind-swept areas.
- Ultimate Bird Sanctuary: The dense, thorny structural branches provide perfectly safe, predator-free nesting sites, while the winter berries feed local garden birds.
- Versatile Growth Form: Responds brilliantly to shaping; can be kept as a structural shrub, grown into a formal hedge, or easily trained flat on frames against fences and brickwork.
Planting & Care
- Position: Totally unfussed, it performs really well in full sun and rewards with maximum berry production, but it also handles partial to deep shade albeit with less berries.
- Soil: Grows in virtually any soil type from clay and sandy soils to loam as long as it is well-draining. It dislikes waterlogged, boggy feet.
- Pruning: Prune carefully in mid-to-late summer right after flowering. Trim back outward-growing shoots to expose the newly forming green berries, taking care to protect your hands with heavy-duty gardening gloves.
- Safety Note: While the berries are highly sought after by local wildlife, the raw seeds inside can cause mild stomach upset if ingested by humans or pets.
- Planting Distance: Plant 50cm to 60 cm apart or 2 per linear metre for a full dense hedge
- Mature Height: 2.5m-3.5m but easily kept in check
- Mature Spread: 2.5m-3.5m but easily kept trimmed and great for growing quite flat against a wall
