Prunus laurocerasus 'Caucasica' is a type of Cherry Laurel and is a vigorous, fast-growing fully evergreen structural shrub. While it shares many of the tough, dense screening attributes of the standard common laurel 'Rotundifolia', 'Caucasica' is specifically favorable for people who require a strictly upright, narrow growth habit and narrower, longer leaves. This makes it an exceptional evergreen choice for tighter property boundaries, narrow urban paths, and formal perimeter screening where horizontal garden space is limited. The foliage consists of large, thick, and leathery leaves that are a distinctly darker, glossier emerald green than other common laurels. Because the leaves grow more vertically on erect stems, it forms a sleek, dense, and "sight-tight" privacy screen that takes up less ground footprint.

Key Features

  • Morphology & Slender Form: Naturally forms a dense, vase-shaped crown with tight, upright branches. Left unpruned, it can eventually reach 3 to 5 metres in height but spreads much less comprehensively than common cherry laurel, typically capping its lateral width at about 1.5 to 3 metres.
  • Vigorous Growth Rate: Highly efficient perimeter security, putting on 40 to 60 cm of fresh new growth annually in ideal conditions. It establishes a dense, functional screening partition in just a few seasons.
  • Refined Foliage: Features long, leathery, and narrowly elongated leaves. They are a rich, high-gloss dark green that retains a vibrant, fresh color throughout harsh freezing winters.
  • Fragrant Blooms: In late spring (April to May), the hedge erupts with striking, upright candle-like spikes (racemes) of small, creamy-white flowers. They emit a heavy, sweet fragrance that masks urban odors.
  • Fruit: Following spring pollination, clusters of green berries develop, ripening to a bright glossy red before maturing into shiny black berry-like drupes by late summer.
  • Toxicity Warning: Like all cherry laurels, all parts of 'Caucasica'—most notably the inner seed kernels and leaves—contain cyanogenic compounds that are highly toxic to humans, dogs, cats, and horses if ingested.

Growing Conditions

  • Sunlight: Eminently flexible. It grows smoothly in full sun, partial shade, or deep shade. Sunnier plots trigger heavier flowering and fruiting cycles, while shaded corners maintain slightly larger leaves.
  • Soil Versatility: Readily establishes across heavy clay, loam, sand, and poor soils. It prefers fertile, moist, and well-drained substrates but tolerates dry or temporarily damp soil.
  • Soil Restrictions: Susceptible to iron deficiency (chlorosis) when forced into shallow, chalky, or highly alkaline soils, which turns its glossy leaves an unappealing pale yellow.
  • Hardiness & Windproofing: Exceptionally frost-hardy (RHS Hardiness rating of H6, handling winter lows down to -20°C). It exhibits strong wind resistance, working well along exposed field boundaries.
  • Urban & Coastal Stamina: Highly resistant to city air pollution, heavy traffic soot, and moderate coastal sea-salt spray.
  • Pruning: Best clipped using selective hand secateurs rather than broad hedge trimmers, as trimmers slice through the oversized leathery leaves, causing them to develop brown, ragged edges.

Wildlife Value

  • The long, pollen-heavy flower panicles act as a primary nectar source for pollinators. They draw in foraging honeybees, bumblebees, and emerging butterflies at a time when other garden food supplies are minimal.
  • The Avian Larder: While poisonous to mammals and humans, the dark autumn berries are entirely harmless to birds. They are aggressively scavenged as a rich energy resource by blackbirds, song thrushes, robins, and starlings.
  • Armored Year-Round Cover: Because 'Caucasica' maintains a thick, dense weave of rigid branches and oversized leaves through the winter, it provides supreme physical nesting shelter and predator armor. Birds favor its dense interior to construct secure nests sheltered from harsh wind, driving rain, and birds of prey.
  • Eco-Barrier Functions: Beyond serving as a direct food source, an established 'Caucasica' buffer line absorbs substantial sound waves and traps blowing airborne dust and carbon particles, significantly cleaning and calming local domestic environments.
