Ligustrum ovalifolium or Green Privet is a robust, fast growing semi-evergreen and sometimes decidious shrub that is one of the most widely used hedging plants in Ireland, highly popular for its ability to form dense, smooth, and structural privacy screens in challenging environments. In the mild, temperate climates common across Ireland, it behaves as a true evergreen, retaining its lush green canopy all winter. In highly exposed, freezing inland locations or during severe winter storms, it may shed a portion of its leaves, which are rapidly replaced by a thick flush of fresh growth in April.
Key Features
- Growth Rate: Grows naturally as an upright, densely branched shrub reaching 3 to 5 metres in height if left completely unpruned. It is famously fast-growing, putting on 30 to 60 cm of new growth annually, allowing it to form a fully mature privacy screen in just 2 to 3 years.
- Foliage: Features smooth, oval, glossy dark-green leaves (4–6 cm long) that grow in a tight, overlapping pattern. This structural density makes it highly effective for soundproofing, wind reduction, and visual privacy.
- Foliage Retention: Classified as semi-evergreen. It holds its lush green leaves through standard, mild winters but may temporarily defoliate or shed a portion of its canopy during exceptionally severe or exposed frosts, shooting back vigorously in spring.
- Flowers: In mid-summer (July), if branches escape tight clipping, it erupts with upright panicles of creamy-white, tubular flowers. The flowers emit a very potent, sweet, and musky fragrance that heavily permeates the surrounding air.
- Fruit: Following pollination, clusters of small, spherical, glossy black berries form in autumn and persist well into winter.
Growing Conditions
- Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. It tolerates deep shade relatively well, though it grows less densely and produces fewer summer flowers there.
- Soil Adaptability: Famously indifferent to soil quality. It establishes successfully in heavy clay, chalk, sand, loam, and poor, compacted soils. The only firm restriction is that the soil must be well-drained; it cannot tolerate waterlogged or permanently boggy ground.
- Hardiness & Exposure: Exceptionally hardy RHS Hardiness H6 / tolerates frost down to -15°C. It handles salt spray on exposed Atlantic coastal fronts and easily deflects high-altitude winds.
- Urban Resilience: Highly tolerant of heavy urban air pollution and vehicular smog. This historically made it the absolute default hedging plant for Victorian town gardens during the industrial era.
- Pruning & Maintenance: To maintain a crisp, formal geometric boundary, a privet hedge benefits from 2 to 3 trims during the summer growing season. It responds exceptionally well to hard structural pruning; old, overgrown hedges can be chopped back tightly to the main trunk in late winter and will regenerate completely.
Wildlife Value
- Nectar Feed: The sweetly scented midsummer flower panicles are recognized by the RHS as Plants for Pollinators They provide a rich nectar buffet that draws in honeybees, bumblebees, hoverflies, and butterflies in massive numbers.
- Avian Larder: The autumn black berries serve as a highly nutritious winter food source. They are actively sought out and consumed by resident and migratory birds, particularly thrushes, blackbirds, waxwings, and robins.
- Nesting Armor: Because the rigid branches intertwine into a tight, nearly impenetrable web, privet offers superb physical shelter and predator protection. Small garden birds routinely select it as a preferred, hidden sanctuary to construct their nests and shield their fledglings.
