Prunus laurocerasus 'Otto Luyken' is a very popular Dwarf Cherry Laurel, it is a magnificent, slow-growing fully evergreen structural shrub. Originally introduced in Germany in 1968, this celebrated variety holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit. While common cherry laurels can become massive trees built for tall boundary walls, 'Otto Luyken' is specifically designed to solve the opposite landscaping need, creating low, dense, and spreading evergreen ground-cover or a perfectly uniform low border hedge that stays neat without constant cutting.
Key Features
- Dwarf Form: Naturally maintains a neat, compact, and wide-spreading dome-like silhouette. Unlike standard laurels that transform into massive trees, 'Otto Luyken' grows slowly at abou 10 to 20 cm per year and reaches a mature height of 1 to 1.5 metres with an extended spread of 1.5 to 2 metres.
- Foliage: Features narrow, glossy, leathery lanceolate leaves that are a striking, deep emerald green year-round. Uniquely, the stiff leaves point skyward at a sharp 45 to 60-degree angle from the stems, allowing them to highly reflect sunlight and brighten dark garden spaces.
- Showy flower spikes: In April and May, it becomes entirely smothered by upright, 3-to-6-inch candle-like spikes of creamy-white flowers. The blossoms emit a very intense, sweet, and pleasing fragrance. It is highly prone to reblooming lightly in autumn if conditions remain mild.
- Fruit: Following spring pollination, the flowers ripen into small, cherry-like red berries that mature to a glossy purple-black by autumn and persist into the winter months.
- Toxicity: Like all members of the laurel family, the foliage and seed kernels contain dangerous cyanogenic compounds making them highly toxic to humans, dogs, cats, and livestock if ingested.
Growing Conditions
- Sunlight Versatility: Eminently flexible. It handles everything from full sun to deep, dense shade. While it flowers most abundantly in sunny plots, its outstanding shade tolerance makes it an invaluable asset for planting under the overhanging eaves of buildings or dark courtyards.
- Soil: Unfussy regarding substrate texture, settling into clay, sand, loam, or rocky profiles. It prefers moist, slightly acidic, and well-drained conditions but easily adapts to poor or poor alkaline soils. Note: It can become pale yellow or chlorotic in highly depleted, shallow chalk profiles.
- Root Competition: Unlike sensitive shrubs, it handles aggressive root competition from established overhead canopy trees exceptionally well. Once established, it develops great drought resistance.
- Environmental Tolerances: Holds an RHS Hardiness rating of H5 (withstanding temperatures down to approximately -15°C) and tolerates heavy urban air pollution and light coastal winds with ease.
- Maintenance & Fungal Care: Low-maintenance but benefits from individual stem pruning with secateurs after spring flowering rather than broad mechanical shearing. To combat shot-hole fungus disease—which punches small holes through the leaves—always avoid overhead watering methods and keep foliage dry.
Wildlife Value
- Dual-Season Pollinator Support: The dense, prominent spring and autumn flower spikes serve as an excellent nectar larder for pollinators. They are worked heavily by honeybees, bumblebees, hoverflies, and butterflies.
- Extrafloral Nectaries: Features an unusual, fascinating botanical trait: small glands positioned at the base of each leaf secrete nectar independently of the flowers. This nectar is actively harvested as a constant sugar source by beneficial native ants and predatory wasps.
- Avian Winter Survival: The autumn-ripening black berries create a rich, high-energy winter food larder for garden birds, particularly thrushes, robins and starlings.
- Low-Level Physical Cover: Because it maintains a dense, compact evergreen canopy right down to ground level, it provides excellent year-round thermal shelter and concealment. Small songbirds hide from predators within its weave, while the low branch clearance offers perfect protective cover for foraging hedgehogs.
- Conservation Warning: Because cherry laurels can naturalize and spread into native woodlands where they aggressively shade out fragile ground flora, experts strongly advise gardeners to never dump clippings or debris in the open countryside.
