Hypericum 'Hidcote' - St. Johns Wort - 40cm-60cm

Hypericum 'Hidcote' commonly known as St John's Wort is a dense, exceptionally reliable, and free-flowering semi-evergreen structural shrub. Proud recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, it is highly favored by garden designers for its long-lasting golden summer display, low maintenance requirements, and superb capability to thrive in challenging ground conditions. The leaves are narrowly oval, smooth, and feature a distinct, leathery rich blue-green or dark green finish. In mild regions like coastal or lowland parts of Ireland, the foliage behaves as a true evergreen, maintaining its dense structure all winter. In heavily exposed or very cold areas, it turns semi-deciduous, dropping a portion of its leaves before bouncing back fresh in early spring.

Key Features

• Size: Grows into a neat, dense, dome-shaped mound. It reaches a mature height and spread of roughly 1.2 to 1.5 metres over 5 to 10 years.
• Foliage: Features simple, neat, lance-shaped leaves that are a deep green to subtly blue-green color. It behaves as an evergreen in mild winters but can drop its leaves in colder climates.
• Flowers: From June all the way into October, the shrub produces a continuous, prolific succession of large, saucer-shaped, golden-yellow flowers measuring 5 to 7 cm across. Each rose-like blossom features five waxy petals surrounding a dramatic, exploding central tuft of prominent orange-tipped stamens.
• Stems & Fruit: The twiggy branches have a distinct reddish hue. As autumn approaches, the spent flowers give way to attractive, reddish seed capsules that add subtle architectural structure in the winter months.

Growing Conditions

• Sunlight: Thrives best and flowers most abundantly in full sun or partial shade. It can adapt to deeper shade, though this will significantly reduce the number of blooms and cause the habit to look leggy.
• Soil Type & pH: Remarkably indifferent to soil quality. It comfortably tolerates acidic, alkaline, chalky, sandy, and heavy clay soils, provided there is decent drainage. It performs exceptionally well in poor, gravelly, or nutrient-stripped ground.
• Moisture: Prefers moist but well-drained soil. Once its roots are fully established, it exhibits excellent drought tolerance and can easily withstand dry spells, including dry shade beneath established trees. However, it strictly dislikes waterlogged or boggy soil.
• Hardiness & Exposure: Fully winter-hardy across Ireland and the UK (tolerating frost down to -15°C) and handles windy, exposed sites without issue.
• Pruning & Care: Because it produces flowers on the current year’s new wood, it responds brilliantly to being hard-pruned back in early spring (March) to about 15–30 cm from the ground. This keeps the growth compact, prevents it from overtaking neighbouring plants, and stimulates a massive flush of summer flowers.

Wildlife Value

• A Haven for Pollinators: The bright yellow color acts as a glowing beacon for insects. The open, cup-shaped design allows easy access for bumblebees, solitary bees, butterflies, and hoverflies, who feed heavily on the nutrient-rich pollen tucked within the dense central stamens.
• Bridge the Late-Summer Gap: Because it flowers continuously from mid-summer into early autumn, it provides a critical late-season food lifeline for pollinators when many other spring and mid-summer garden plants have faded.
• Shelter & Foraging: The dense, twiggy, dome-like architecture provides superb low-level ground cover, creating a protective canopy for foraging beetles, spiders, and small garden amphibians. In the winter, the small seed capsules are occasionally investigated by foraging birds.
