Cornus alba 'Aurea' 60cm-90cm

Cornus alba 'Aurea' or Golden Red-Barked Dogwood, is a spectacular, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub. Highly prized for its dramatic all-season transformations, this hardy plant seamlessly bridges the gap between summer color and stark winter architecture, making it an indispensable asset for structural garden design. As the plant breaks dormancy, it puts on a dense display of large, broad, soft golden-yellow foliage. The clean yellow leaves do not bleach or scorch easily in high summer sun. In May and June, flat clusters of small, creamy-white flowers emerge, later transitioning into small white berries, occasionally tinged with blue. Once leafless, the shrub reveals its most iconic trait, a glorious thicket of brilliant, upright crimson-red stems.

Key Features

• Dual-Season Glow: It delivers several seasons of contrast across the year:
• Spring/Summer: Soft, bright golden yellow ovate leaves emerge to instantly lift darker corners of a border.
• Winter: Once the leaves drop in autumn, it reveals a dense thicket of vivid, ruby-red upright stems that gleam dramatically against bare winter landscapes.
• Size & Habit: Naturally forms a rounded, bushy, multi-stemmed thicket growing 1.5m to 2.5m tall and wide. It grows at a fast rate, establishing its structural footprint quickly.
• Flowers & Berries: In May and June, it bears small, flat clusters of creamy-white flowers. By midsummer, these transform into small, decorative white-to-bluish berries.

Growing Conditions

• Soil & Moisture: Incredibly accommodating. It thrives in moist, wet, heavy clay, or boggy soils, making it an exceptional candidate for damp garden hollows or low-lying waterlogged ground across Ireland. It will grow perfectly fine in any moderately fertile, well-drained soil as well. [1, 2, 3]
• Light Aspect: Performs excellently in full sun to partial shade. While the golden leaves tolerate partial shade well, planting it in full sun stimulates the brightest and most intense winter stem colour.
• Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout Ireland, coping easily with temperatures down to -20°C (RHS H7) and tolerating heavy inland exposure.
• Crucial Pruning Routine (Coppicing): The most intense red color occurs only on young, fresh stems. Once established, the shrub should be cut back hard to 5–7 cm from the ground each March. Note that hard pruning means sacrificing that year's summer flowers and berries in favor of explosive winter stem color

Wildlife Value

• Bird Food: Garden birds eagerly descend upon the shrub in late summer and autumn to strip the white, pea-sized berries once they ripen.
• Pollinator Support: The flat-topped flower clusters are rich in pollen and nectar, serving as a magnetic food source for honeybees, bumblebees, hoverflies, and foraging butterflies during early summer.
• Dense Winter Shelter: If left unpruned or selectively pruned, its multi-stemmed, thicket-forming canopy provides helpful nesting and foraging cover for garden wildlife.
