Molinia caerulea subsp. arundinacea 'Black Arrows'. Originally introduced by the highly esteemed Dove Cottage Nursery in West Yorkshire, this exceptional cultivar stands out as one of the single darkest-flowered selections of Purple Moor Grass available in the trade. The plant spends its spring and summer forming a neat, tidy hummock of upright, deep green foliage before sending up a profusion of tall, architectural stems. The highlight of 'Black Arrows' is its stark, dark flowering habit. In mid-summer, stiffly arching, dark-tinted wands rise high above the foliage mound, carrying open, see-through panicles of misty purple-black flower spikelets. This see-through quality acts like a transparent veil, allowing light to filter through beautifully and letting you interweave it seamlessly in mid-border designs without blocking background companions. Exceptionally hardy and structural, this grass gracefully resists wind and rain, holding its moody dark shapes cleanly until late autumn when the foliage transforms into a bright, golden-yellow finish.
