Ireland is gearing up for its big annual celebration of trees

Ireland is gearing up for its big annual celebration of trees, as the ESB Tree Week kicks off from next Sunday. Tree Week has been going since 1985 and is a week long programme of events in honour of the biggest, most-loved and most important plants we grow.

Hundreds of fantastic fun days out for all the family are taking place all over the country, so visit the Tree Council website at www.treecouncil.ie to find out what’s going on near you. There are tree planting events, farm walks and wildlife-friendly talks and workshops looking at how essential trees are for our honeybees, wild birds and uncountable other creatures.

You’ve also got the chance to mark the week at home, as it’s the perfect time to plant a tree of your own. These days with dwarf trees from minarette apples to elegant Japanese acers you can have a tree whatever your garden’s size, even if you’re growing mainly in containers. Pop down to our garden centre here in Co. Limerick and we’ll help you to choose, whether you’re looking for a piece of Irish heritage like a Kilkenny Pearmain apple, a year-round small-garden beauty like Amelanchier lamarckii, or a tree that holds a special meaning for you or your family
